Five Ways to Get Real Instagram Followers

Instagram is a fun and creative way to share one’s life with other people, and we are not only speaking about our preference. Over 200 million other people think so too since these people are active on Instagram and sharing 60 million images every month. That’s some staggering statistics that the marketing world cannot simply ignore. We’re particularly floored with the average engagement rate on Instagram which is 58 times higher than on Facebook.

According to Forrester Research, Instagram’s average engagement rate is at 4.21% while other social networking sites only have less than 1%. Take note that this figure is only the average, and you can definitely do better than that. Your goal must be not to be mediocre but to aim for more than 4.21% engagement rate. Here are some ways to get Instagram followers that will drive up engagement.

Get creative with hashtags.

Aside from using one-word hashtags, mix up words, and use hashtags that are relevant to your post. The worst thing you can do to your captions is to be boring, so use quirky, attention-catching hashtags. Another tactic that will work is to create dedicated hashtags specific to your company or marketing strategy. The first thing that comes to mind is Nike’s age-old #justdoit tagline which has also become the brand’s signature hashtag:

Instead of relying on Instagram and social media to promote your specific hashtag, showcase the hashtag through offline means too. You can include it on your print ads or store signage. You can even print it on your receipts.

Use value-adding captions.

People follow accounts that are entertaining, inspiring, or intellectually stimulating. So exert effort and put a lot of thought into your captions. Make sure that you tell stories because people love storytelling. National Geographic, the number one most-followed brand on Instagram, is very good at matching great pictures with equally interesting and, at times, thought-provoking stories.

Don’t forget your call to action (CTA). Without it, people’s interest in your content won’t lead to the achievement of your ultimate marketing goal. Whether you want people to visit your website or make a purchase, let them know that by adding a CTA on your post.

Reach out to influencers.

Look for influencers within your niche, stay updated with their posts, and interact with them. These people most likely have a huge influence on your target audience, and reaching out to these influencers will also allow you to expand your base of followers. Make sure to be one of the first to like and comment on influencers’ photos by turning on notifications.

1. Reach out to the local community.

It will also do you good to be visible in the local scene, like in the city of your target followers, an event that will likely interest them, or a club frequented by them. Go to the search page, select Places, and type the place’s name. All geotagged Instagram posts for that location will appear.

2. Create your own personality on Instagram.

There’s no secret formula to becoming successful in Instagram. It all comes down to developing a relatable style or personality so that your target audience would be enticed to follow you, engage with you, and ultimately do business with you. Chubbies, a brand for men’s shorts, has created a personality on Instagram that is too funny to resist. I’m sure even those people outside of Chubbies’ target audience are also checking the page.

You can’t just hurriedly post content after content without thinking about their overall impact. Each post must be consistent with the brand image or to the marketing campaign, from the visual content style, down to the captions, hashtags, and other little details. To be consistent with your own style, you might want to remove unwanted tagged photos and to approve pending photo tags to avoid tagged photos that are not consistent with your style. You can hide tagged photos by following these steps:

  1. Go to the tagged photos section of your profile.
  2. Select the photo or post you want to remove.
  3. Click on the three dots on the upper right corner of the picture.
  4. Tap on “Photo/Post Options.”
  5. You have two options: “Remove Me From Post,” and “Hide from My Profile.”

3. Any of these two options will do the trick, but removing yourself from the post might be obvious to the person who tagged you.

To make sure that unwanted photos do not appear automatically on your profile, go to your profile, tap on the three horizontal lines at the top-right part of the screen, select Settings > Privacy and Security > Photos and Videos of You, and toggle the “Add Automatically” option.

How to get more Instagram followers

To summarize, these are the tactics in getting real Instagram followers which are discussed above:

  1. Get creative with hashtags.
  2. Use value-adding captions.
  3. Reach out to influencers.
  4. Reach out to the local community.
  5. Create your own personality or style.

We came up with these tactics based on what we have observed from successful Instagram accounts, and they are all good to emulate. Some accounts also resort to buying Instagram followers as one of their first steps since having a huge follower count tends to attract more people.
