Myths About Buying Instagram Followers

Instagram has become the most popular social media site for visual content. This popularity has lead to an explosion of users and marketers alike vying for attention and followers. Since you can’t build a following without some credibility, people turn to social media boosting providers to kickstart their accounts to build credibility and social proof.

A number of myths and scare tactics have popped up over the years about buying Instagram followers. These common misconceptions are easily dispelled with a little bit of logic, and a look at what they actually do.

Myth #1 – Buying Instagram followers doesn't work

A lot of people will try to say that buying followers doesn’t work because you’ll just receive fake followers who won’t pay attention to you. Although it’s true that these followers aren’t usually going to engage with you, it’s false that they won’t help you gain new followers. Which of the two Beyonce fan pages are you more likely to be interested in:

The only logical answers to which you'd follower are:

  1. The one with 52,200 followers, duh, who cares about 20 followers? It looks like trash, why are you wasting my time with this?
  2. I'm following EVERYTHING Beyonce, who are you kidding?

There’s also the idea that despite social proof, buying followers still doesn’t work because they’ll eventually be deleted. This rumor gained traction through purges where celebrities like Justin Bieber got called out for a sudden large drop in followers.

Although this is partially true, it’s still dismissible because it can be easily avoided. Simply be sure to buy from a quality provider that we recommend, and you won’t have to worry about follower loss. This was proven in late 2014 during the Instagram Purge – millions of followers were deleted and many providers lost all of their followers, but followers from the top providers didn’t even flinch.

Myth #2 – Buying Instagram followers is illegal

The idea that buying followers is illegal is a complete myth. Though buying followers does violate the Instagram Terms of Service, getting banned can easily be avoided by purchasing high-quality followers from a reputable vendor.

Ultimately, followers are not a huge risk for your account getting banned regardless of quality. Comments, however, can be, so be sure to know the risks and buy from a reputable provider if you decide to go that route.

Myth #3 – Fake followers don’t add value

Since fake followers don’t engage with your content, people make the argument that they don’t add any real value beyond the number to your follower count. While your engagement rate will drop by adding followers who will never engage, the fact that your high follower count will get new, organic followers counteracts a lowered engagement rate.

To be fair, we're all going to have lower engagement than Instagram's most followed user, Selena Gomez, posting a selfie with a snake. I mean Taylor Swift.

Another thing to watch out for in regards to shady providers is those whose delivered followers will unfollow your page after the order has been fulfilled. This issue is no longer as common as it used to be in the past, but just like deleted followers and low-quality followers, it’s important to be aware. You can avoid these by reading reviews and researching the provider before you place your order.

Myth #4 – Buying followers hurts your reputation

A couple of mini-myths support the idea that fake followers will hurt your reputation. People say that fake followers aren’t targeted, so it’s obvious they’re fake because they’re from different countries, have interests other than your niche, and things like that.

In reality, there are vendors who actually do provide targeted followers for specific locations and niches. It’s just a matter of doing some research and finding the right one. Also, in reality, what would hurt your reputation the most is being a snake.

Olivia just realized I’m wearing earrings of her face.

Watch out, kitty! A snake that size could swallow you whole!

It’s also said that fake followers are easily spotted for more blatant reasons, such as an obvious randomly-generated name, no profile picture, no uploads, and things like that. But again, this all comes down to the reputation of the provider you are ordering your followers from. Stick to those with good reviews and a solid reputation, and you won’t need to worry about fake followers raising red flags through obvious fake follower traits.

The truth about buying Instagram followers

At the end of the day, buying followers won’t make you famous, and it definitely won’t be your one secret to success. You will still need to get real followers with actual marketing techniques. However, there have been many cases where buying followers was proven to be directly responsible for sizeable growth to Instagram following.

The most important thing to remember when buying followers is to always stick with credible vendors who provide high-quality followers. If you’re able to build up a large amount of followers that look real, even if they’re not, you’ll gain enough social proof to boost your credibility and improve organic growth with real people.
